Good evening guys welcome back to my website. In the last post, I had written about how you could find out appropriate spring rate for your suspension and today I am going to discuss spring terminologies which would be used in next post where I would be writing about designing your own springs. So, let us start today’s topic i.e. Spring Terminologies.
The value of C is should lie between 3 to 15 because if C<3 then it is the invitation to high stresses and it is not easy to manufacture such spring and if C>15 it leads to buckling i.e. instead of compression it bends thus fails in providing handling and comfort to the vehicle. Generally, a designer prefers to keep it between 6 to 9.

- Free Length (L0) – It is the length of the spring under no load. It is given as
L0=Ls+ Total Gap + deflection of the spring
- Pitch- It is the distance between two adjacent coils of the spring under no load.
- Spring Rate- As already defined earlier it is the ratio of load to the deflection. But if you are buying an OEM suspension and wanted to know the spring rate of it this formula could be used.
